Office complex construction to begin in Nov....

After a few months' delay, crews are expected to break ground in November on a $45 million office complex adjoining the Baptist Medical Center on State Street in Jackson.

City planners and neighborhood advocates say the 177,000-square-foot facility will be a huge boost for the Greater Belhaven area, which has a number of vacancies.
Project officials hoped construction would begin this summer, but Robby Channell, spokesman for Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, said progress slowed while developer Landmark Healthcare Facilities worked to relocate three restaurants in the proposed construction zone.

The developer also has been delayed in obtaining needed approvals from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, he said. Though Baptist owns the land, Landmark will own and operate the facility, which is expected to open in spring 2013.

Landmark this week received the required certificate that will allow Keifer's restaurant to move from its longtime home on Poplar Boulevard to one across the street. Two others have vacated their old premises. The Pizza Shack has re-opened on Fortification Street. The owners of the local KFC franchises could not be reached Wednesday regarding plans for a new restaurant.
